i2i HOMEProgram Overview
Program History
In the diverse landscape of the State of Illinois, thousands of organizations diligently engage with communities, striving to make a difference. However, the struggle with capacity remains a common challenge, exacerbated by historical disinvestment that has left many "grassroots" organizations vulnerable and at risk of dissolution.
These organizations face fundamental challenges and organizational needs that demand urgent attention. i2i emerged as a response to this pressing issue, aiming to be a transformative force. Its inception acknowledges the precarious position of grassroots organizations and their essential role in community well-being amid historical disinvestments.
Historical disinvestment has cast a shadow over the resilience of grassroots organizations, and i2i stands committed to addressing these challenges. Firm in the belief that with the right resources and assistance, these “grassroots” organizations can not only weather the storm but thrive.

i2i focuses on grassroots organizations dedicated to changing the circumstances of violence in their communities. By providing essential support, i2i becomes a resource to ensure that their capacity is not merely sustained but elevated, guiding them on a path to sustainability.
Together, we shape a future where capacity is not a barrier but a steppingstone to sustained impact.

Program Overview

Welcome to Institute 2 Innovate (i2i), the innovative capacity-building hub launched by the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA). At i2i, our mission is to empower statewide community-based organizations by providing tailored support to strengthen infrastructure, increase sustainability, and address critical capacity needs.
In adopting an inclusive cohort approach, i2i welcomes cohort members, including local organizations awaiting funding from the state of Illinois and ICJIA grantees facing capacity constraints. Our commitment lies in fostering an inclusive environment, ensuring that organizations at various stages of development benefit from our expertise. Drawing from the wisdom of the National Council of Nonprofits, we define nonprofit capacity building as more than a one-time effort; it's a continuous improvement strategy. This strategic approach serves as the key to bringing a nonprofit to the next level of operational, programmatic, financial, and organizational maturity, enabling more effective and efficient advancement of their mission into the future.

While capacity building often takes a back seat in an organization's pursuit of immediate results, the National Council of Nonprofits warns against this oversight. They emphasize that capacity building is an investment in the effectiveness and future sustainability of a nonprofit, strengthening its ability to fulfill its mission over time and enhancing its positive impact on lives and communities.
